Incentives – Do They Make a Difference?
This will be a short and sweet blog this week as I really want to hear from all of you on this subject. I am curious to hear your views on the use of incentives as part of your fleet safety program.

Do you feel that incentives make a difference? Do you think they help change the behavior of the person driving, or do they just get lost in the million other things that sales people have on their minds day in and day out?

I happen to be a believer in incentives, but the… ...

Want to Reduce Your Accident Rate by 75%?
I can do it for you in just five minutes. Yup, that’s right, just five simple minutes.  Want to know how?

I simply change 75% of your “preventable” accidents to “non-preventable”, and then use only the remaining preventable ones to calculate your accident rate.  I see this happen more often than I would like to, and it is not a practice I use. Whenever I work with a client I always want to see the total accident picture. The actual number of accidents that occurred regardless… ...

 How is Your Hand Placement?
As a follow-up to last week’s blog on Behind-The-Wheel training, I am curious to hear your thoughts on a new technique that is being recommended by a number of safety training institutes for proper hand placement on the wheel while driving.

Let me tell you right off the bat, I don’t agree with it at all!  The new recommendation is to place your hands on the wheel at the 8 & 4 position, when looking at a clock face.  When I first heard this, I scratched my head and wondered… ...

 Is Behind-The-Wheel Training Effective?
So, what do you think?  Come on!  I know there are more than a few of you out there that have already participated in at least one behind-the-wheel (BTW) training program, and some of you have participated in more than one.

First, let’s take a look at some of the different types of BTW programs available.  While this list does not include all types offered in the market, it does list the most common types offered to fleet drivers.

BTW on a closed course… ...

Priority or Value…..Which One Describes Your Fleet Safety Program?
So when you read the title, how many of you thought the word “value” was used in the context of value for your money?

Far too often I hear companies that are beginning, or redesigning their fleet safety program tout that “safe driving is a priority for our company and senior management.” Or, and I really love this one, “the safety of our drivers is priority number one.”  If this sounds like your company, you may have a tougher time developing and sustaining your program than you… ...

Is Too Much Safety a Bad Thing?
At a recent conference I made a presentation on the future of fleet safety and vehicle technology that will make the vehicles of the future the safest ever on the road. During the question and answer portion of my presentation, a person asked me the following.

“Do you feel that the new safety technology will create a situation where the driver becomes reliant and/or over-confident with the safety technology resulting in poorer driving habits?”

What a great question.… ...

Driver Safety Program or Vehicle Safety Program….What’s The Difference?
Last week we discussed the topic of priority versus value, and I hope it got you thinking about the importance of identifying and positioning your program to your employees.  This week my challenge to you is to once again look at your program and assess your approach.

Do you have a Driver Safety program or a Vehicle Safety program?

If you are asking yourself, “what’s the difference?” or “is there really a difference?” the answer is – yes, there is a difference… ...
